Photo Galleries

01

Context

Flickr was a photo and video hosting service and an online community for photographers. Members of Flickr could organize photos into various specialized curations: albums, galleries, and groups. We streamlined how curation worked across the product to encourage engagement and creativity within the community.

02

Goals

  • Increase new gallery and group creation
  • Increase photo additions to galleries and groups
  • Rebuild galleries feature with modern components
  • Improve curation accessibility on mobile web and tablets

03

Discovery

We knew from previous research that many Flickr users would search for photos taken by other members and save them to their favorites list or invite them to a group.

The product supported an outdated curation feature called galleries. Galleries gave users tools to curate and showcase sets of photos taken by others. This feature had been long neglected and was not well integrated into the main product. We learned from our surveys that awareness of the feature was low, though our site data told us that users who created galleries were very engaged.

We invited gallery creators to join the Alpha Group, an enthusiastic audience of early-access users, to share their experience with the feature and run usability tests.

04

Findings

We found deep usability issues, not just with galleries, but with curation on the product as a whole.

We discovered that users found curation to be laborious and involved many interactions for a user to achieve their goal. Users did not care to create a gallery or add a photo to a group when they could simply fave an image immediately and move on. This resulted in unwieldy and unusable Faves collections for many users.

In addition to improvements to the curation process, Alpha Group members also gave us insight on what specific changes we could make to galleries as part of the redesign:

  • Increase maximum number of images
  • Display larger images with options for different layouts
  • Add new images to the top instead of the bottom to reduce scrolling
  • Allow gallery owner to add their own images, not just images from others
  • Private galleries

05

Ideation

We put together a series of wireframes and prototypes for Alpha Group testing and feedback.

Each round of feedback helped us refine our approach and make progress towards our goal of easy curation.

06

Designs

Curation improvements:

  • “Add to” button applied to every photo
  • New notifications for photos added to galleries and groups
  • Curation components optimized for usability across devices

Galleries improvements:

  • Gallery item limit increased from 50 to 500
  • New larger image sizes with layout options
  • New image card component allowed for hover-to-play videos
  • New items appeared at the top of the gallery, and as part of the gallery list mosaic
  • Integrated organizational tools: add from Faves, reorder items, edit gallery info

07

Results

  • Group creation retained steady growth; gallery creation began a significant increase of more than 10% month over month
  • Photos added to galleries and groups measurably increased
  • Galleries were rebuilt with innovative new components that were reused in future projects such as Activity Feed
  • Curation features were made available to millions of mobile web and tablet users

I run a lot of Group sites through Flickr. This is a much needed work over. I just wanted to say Thank You to your support staff and team for making an advance on something that I showcase. I’ve been waiting for this for some time.

Thanks so much for giving Galleries a shiny new face-lift and cool new features. The layout is gorgeous and I can tell you all have put in a lot of thought and effort into this upgrade.

Jolly S., MEMBER SINCE 2016

The new galleries are fantastic. I have been a strong user of Galleries for a long time now and the new format (and increased photo limit) are major steps forward.
